Reading Difficulty Risk Screener Information
Marysville Joint Unified School District is committed to ensuring that all students develop strong reading skills early in their academic journey. As part of this commitment, all students in kindergarten through second grade will participate in the District’s Reading Difficulty Risk Screener during the month of February.
Why is this assessment important?
California Education Code Section 53008 requires school districts to screen students in grades K–2 to identify those who may be at risk for reading difficulties. Early identification allows schools to provide timely, targeted support to help students build foundational reading skills.
What screener will be used?
In June 2025, MJUSD adopted Amira Learning as its universal reading screener for grades K–2. Amira is a brief, one-on-one, computer-based reading assessment that listens to students read aloud and analyzes key foundational literacy skills as follows:

The screener is developmentally appropriate, adaptive, and typically takes only a few minutes to complete.
How will results be shared?
Families will receive their child’s screening results within 45 days of the assessment. Results will indicate whether a student is:
- On track with grade-level reading skills, or
- At risk for reading difficulties
What happens if my child is identified as at risk?
If a student is identified as being at risk, the school will:
- Notify families
- Share a plan for improvement, which may include additional instruction, targeted interventions, and progress monitoring to support your child’s reading development
If you have questions about the Reading Difficulty Risk Screener or Amira Learning, please contact your child’s school for more information.
