Attendance
Absences Excused by State Law
- Illness- A doctor's note may be required for extended illness.
- Quarantine- directed by a doctor.
- Medical, dental, optometric or chiropractic appointments or treatment.
- Attending the funeral services of an immediate family member, if the services are conducted one day of excused absence provided by State law and up to three days if the services are out-of-state.
- Jury duty as required by law.
- Excusing from school to obtain required immunizations (not more than 5 days).
- All absences must be verified within 5 school days to be deemed "excused". All absences after this time will be considered "unexcused" and may result in a referral to SARB.
Excessive Absence Policy
When a student has absences in excess of 10% of days enrolled for the school year, any further absences for illness must be verified by a physician or school personnel. Failure to provide physician or school personnel verification will result in absences being recorded as unexcused.
The District may, when a student with absences exceeding 10% of the days enrolled, institute actions intended to improve the student's attendance. These interventions may include referral to the District Truancy Officer or other intervention personnel who will make a home visit, school nurse reviewing illness claims, and or referral to the School Attendance Review Board (SARB). Ed Code 46011
Kindergarten Attendance
Attendance in kindergarten, prior to age six, is not mandatory. If you choose to enroll your child, your decision to do so comes with some important responsibilities. The first is to support your child's learning. The California State Standards are focused on the daily development of important skills that will help our child be successful in first grade and beyond. Talking to your child about what they learned each day, support with homework assignments, reading to your child and making sure your child is in school every day. Your child's success in kindergarten is dependent on being in school daily so they do not fall behind. When absences are excessive, your child's readiness for first grade will be in danger.
MJUSD has implemented a policy that requires your kindergarten student to be in school at least 90% of the 180 days in a school hear. This means that your child cannot miss more than 2 days per month for any reason. If your child is considered "excessively absent" we will ask that you withdraw your child from kindergarten for the rest of the school year. You will then have the choice to re-enroll your child next year in kindergarten or first grade.
All of the services in the district are available to assist you and it is our desire to help you in improving your student's attendance at school. Please contact Zachary Pless, Director of Student Welfare and Attendance (530) 749-6901 if you are having difficulty getting your child to school. Together we can help your child be successful.
Unexcused Absences
- The missing of class or school without an excused reason, whether it is pupil or parent initiated.
- An absence which has not been verified by the close of the school attendance office on the day of attendance.
- An absence for which advanced approval is necessary and approval was not obtained before absence.
- The failure of a pupil to be in the assigned classroom/locker room when the tardy bell has unexcused tardy.
