Learning Center

Warrior Pride

April 2012!

Spring is here!

Spring has sprung and the students are energized and ready to get out and do new things!  We have begun a project in the learning center that includes teaching about character traits while using technology!

(This is a letter that was sent home this week)

Dear parent(s)/guardian(s):

We have started a video project in the learning center!  The students are in small groups creating skits teaching about character traits (responsibility, fairness, respect, trustworthiness, citizenship or caring).  We will be filming the students’ skits and creating short videos to share with our class and possibly future students.  If youDO NOTwant your student to participate in the filming please sign the slip below and return it to Mrs. Bowman by April 20th.  Opting out of the filming will not affect your student’s grade; they will be given an alternate assignment.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this assignment, please feel free to contact any of the teachers in the learning center. 530-741-6194.

Thank you for sharing your students with us!

Only sign and return if you DO NOTwant your student to participate!

What can you do to help your student?

The students have been asked to bring a binder for Learning Center if possible.  We have also asked if they could have a minimum of 5 dividers in that binder. If this is a problem, please have your student talk to their Learning Center teacher.

Students in the Learning Center are required to complete the Gold Sheet agenda form for every period.  This is a wonderful tool for staying connected to your student’s education.  The Gold Sheets will is a record of what activities or lessons were taught in each class, as well as a place to write homework assignments.

Students in the Learning Center are expected to come to class prepared. This means, taking hats off before entering the classroom and being ready to learn with a pencil in hand.

If your student shows proficiency in the areas of math, reading and writing, and performs well on the benchmark assessments and in class, it is possible to change into a different elective.

Grading Structure!

Students are responsible for keeping a “reflection sheet” which is their grading document for class.  The sheet is broken into 4 categories:

· Prepared ~ 20%

· Behavior ~ 40%

· Binder Check ~ 20%

· Assignments ~ 20%

The students are also responsible for getting their reflection sheet initialed every day by a teacher in the classroom.

Classroom Expectations!

Our classroom is structured around a few expectations/guidelines.  Please take some time to talk with your student about these expectations.

Ø I will treat you with respect, so you will know how to treat me.

Ø Feel free to do anything that doesn’t cause a problem for anyone else.

Ø If you cause a problem, I will ask you to solve it.

Ø If you can’t solve the problem, or choose not to, I will do something.

Ø What I do will depend on the special person, and the special situation.

Ø If you feel something is unfair, whisper to me, “I’m not sure that’s fair,” and we will talk.

School Policies in the Classroom

Ø   RESPECT is essential for success!

Ø   There is one “free pass” for the bathroom per week. However, no bathroom breaks will be permitted during the first and last 15 minutes of class.

Ø   No gum in the classroom. Water is okay!

Ø   Please dress appropriately for classroom success. Be aware that short shorts and shirts with thin straps are NOT PERMITTED.

Ø   Electronic devices (cell phones, IPods, MP3 players, ear buds, etc.) are to be off and put away.

o If confiscated, the item may be picked up in the intervention office at the end of the day.

Ø   Handbook policies will be strictly enforced!
