GOAL

The goal of the MJUSD Nutritional Services Department is to provide high quality, attractive, nutritious meals to all students within the program. Approximately 3,300 breakfasts and 7,100 lunches are served each day to students in our program.

EMPLOYMENT

MJUSD Nutritional Services employs over 75 people and has a reliable support staff of substitute employees.

FUNDING

MJUSD Nutritional Services is a fiscally sound program within the MJUSD District. It operates on a $4 million budget and is expected to maintain a positive fund balance and to contribute to the general fund to recover indirect costs such as utilities and support staff, along with other expenses incurred in the maintenance of the program and its equipment. Federal and state regulations include strict record keeping and accountability requirements in order to receive reimbursement for meals served. MJUSD Nutritional Services consistently looks for innovative ways to increase cost effectiveness and to optimize purchasing power which ultimately benefit our students.

NUTRITION

Research has shown that there is a crucial relationship between nutrition and health, as well as between nutrition and learning. MJUSD Nutritional Services participates in the USDA’s National School Lunch, Basic and Especially Needy School Breakfast, After School Snack, Summer Food Service and Commodity Distribution Programs. USDA regulations guide our programs. Monthly menus are planned to meet the USDA specifications based on the Dietary Guideline for Americans. Meals are to be low in fat, sodium and sugar, but provide sufficient calories to meet needs of growing children.

LOGISTICS

The department has a central warehouse and distribution center where large deliveries are made. Within the MJUSD Nutritional Services Department, food products, dry goods, and other related supplies are then allocated to each site where the meals are prepared and served daily. All sites are staffed with ServSafe certified employees. We always welcome the thoughts and ideas from parents and staff members within our District.
